Aurora Lakeland Medical Center Emergency Department
The Auroral Lakeland Medical Center Emergency Department implemented two key initiatives that significantly improved patient flow and outcomes. The team redesigned the triage process and introduced a dedicated triage nurse role. This change reduced the time from patient arrival to triage, room placement and initial provider contact—ensuring quicker assessments and accelerating the start of care.
Second, Aurora Lakeland restructured team workflows to prioritize the timely completion of lab and imaging orders. The goal was to have all diagnostic tests initiated within 30 minutes of being ordered, and this shift in team coordination has driven faster clinical decision-making and more efficient throughput.
These initiatives have had a direct and measurable impact. The average discharge length of stay dropped from 184 minutes to 135 minutes. By focusing on early triage and streamlined teamwork, the ED staff has created a more responsive, patient-centered ED environment that supports both clinical excellence and operational efficiency.
