Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Emergency Department

The 21-bed pediatric emergency department improved patient experience and operational efficiency through several initiatives, including a new intake model that allows for early identification of acuity and streamlines patient flow. Dedicated fast-track zones for low-acuity cases reduce wait times and free up critical care resources. Real-time tracking systems monitor patient progress and help staff proactively manage bottlenecks.

To improve the patient and family experience, the team emphasizes clear communication and compassionate care. Child life specialists are integrated into the care team to provide emotional support and distraction techniques during procedures. The department also offers multilingual resources and visual aids to ensure understanding across diverse populations. Regular staff training in trauma-informed care and customer service reinforces the
commitment to empathy and respect.

Data from post-visit surveys and real-time rounding drive continuous improvement. By aligning clinical efficiency with a family-centered approach, the team is able to create a pediatric ED environment that is both responsive and reassuring.
