AHN Jefferson Hospital Emergency Department

Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania

The multi-disciplinary, system level Pediatric Emergency Care Team that started at Jefferson Hospital consists of registered nurses, pharmacists, pediatricians, respiratory therapy, emergency medicine providers, and nursing education. A staff nurse champion is responsible for providing updates and education on current pediatric expert practices to their respective teams. As a result of feedback, the team has identified simulation opportunities and provided pediatric simulation, which included pediatric arrest and resuscitation, IV administration and placement, febrile seizures, drug administration and dehydration leading to hypovolemic shock.

Jefferson Hospital’s Team Triage uses a multidisciplinary team approach to rapidly assess the patient and initiate protocols improving the time to see a provider. This requires a staff team of ED RNs, advanced practice providers, patient care technicians, radiology technicians, and registration to work together to provide the patient with a remarkable experience. The team set goals of four minutes for door to room, eight minutes for door to triage, and 12 minutes for door to provider. The success of Team Triage allowed the team to exceed the left- without-being-seen rate and door-to-doc goals, with LWBS percentage dropping from 2 percent to 0.87 percent.
