Tania D. Strout, PhD, MS, RN
Tania Strout’s enduring and substantial contributions to the emergency nursing specialty are in the areas of research and practice. As a specialist in psychometric theory, Strout has significantly impacted emergency nursing practice by designing valid standardized tools, particularly for patients with behavioral health issues. One example is in implementation outcomes associated with the Agitation Severity Scale she developed which led to faster time to medication administration, decreased restraint use and reduced staff injuries. Her research has also contributed widely to the development of screening tools to identify exposure to youth bullying and sexual assault, the presence of opioid use disorder, and the severity of pain in pre-verbal and early verbal toddlers.
Additionally, her research has addressed critical challenges to improve patient care and workplace safety in emergency settings. She excels at identifying gaps in the evidence and leads clinical teams in generating new research that supports practice, improves patient care and enhances the emergency nursing workplace. Strout is a professor of emergency medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and the director and vice-chair for research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
