Weston, Florida

Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, part of Cleveland Clinic’s five-hospital regional health system in Florida, is a nonprofit, multispecialty, academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. We are a leading provider of advanced tertiary and quaternary care renowned for providing high-quality, collaborative and compassionate care. With 42 private rooms and ten fast-track bays, Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital Emergency Department is open 24/7 with care by providers from more than 55 specialties.

To improve the overall experience for emergency department (ED) patients, measures were taken to increase efficiency, patient flow, and reduce wait times. A provider-in-triage (PIT) process was implemented to quickly assess and treat patients upon arrival. A split-flow model was also introduced created to process minor complaints through a Fast Track area, with the more complex cases being managed through triage and the main ED. Critical patients are immediately brought into the critical care treatment rooms for assessment. These measures have resulted in reduced safety events in the ED waiting room and Left Without Treatment (LWT) numbers. However, increased volumes have resulted in increased wait times for bed placement for admitted patients. To address this, the “ED Admit Unit” was created, providing a dedicated area within the ED for admitted boarding patients to receive inpatient services while awaiting admission to a hospital unit.
