Nursing Competency in Aging Award
This award recognizes a nurse who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the care of the older adult in the emergency care setting and/or the older adult in a community program.
Denise Rhew is the CNS for five emergency departments. She truly has the desire to improve the care of the elderly in the emergency department. Her dissertation focused on emergency nurses attitudes, knowledge, and care behaviors toward the older adult. In 2019, she spoke at the Nursing World Conference in Rome and London on recognizing dementia versus delirium and the care of the elderly who presents to the ED. Denise was a member of the ENA Geriatric Committee during 2017 and 2018, she helped update GENE modules and contributed to the Geriatric Toolkit. As a member of the Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders program, she spoke at the 2017 conference on recognizing elder abuse and elder maltreatment assessment. She has worked to prevent falls and injury of the elderly in the ED by getting stretcher alarm pads. Denise recently updated a chapter on the care of the older adult in a medical-surgical nursing textbook, to help educate our next generation of nurses.
